Coping with Anxiety

# Schedule a Time Out – A few minutes set aside for just you gives you time to step out of the situation long enough to regain perspective. One time out I like is stepping into a warm tub of water, sliding down into the water and letting the soothing comfort of a bubble bath “take me away” from the stressful situation.

# Give Yourself an Attitude Check – Take a few minutes to ask yourself, “Am I approaching life with a positive ‘I can’ attitude or with an attitude of negativism and defeat?” Taking an attitude check is as important to my mind as taking my pulse is to my body.

# Search for Hot Buttons – Hot Buttons are places in your life that stir up anxiety and seem to contribute to the stress in your life. Be on the lookout for the things that make you angry or frustrated immediately. These are your Hot Buttons. Once you find them, you can work through them by finding pressure points, the next item in our letting go checklist.

# Look for Revelation in Circumstances – Realize that the circumstances of life don’t make you who you are; they reveal who you are. Ask yourself the tough question, “What about me is being revealed by my action/reaction to the circumstances in my life?” Be aware that the same destructive stress patterns in one person’s life can be motivation to overcome difficult circumstances in the life of another person. Personal attitude could be the difference between a stressful situation and a learning one.

# Do a Control Check-Up – Take a look at who or what you trying to gain control over, and then remember this very basic truth: the only person you can have control over is yourself. I often try to gain control over circumstances and suddenly realize that the situation is a more difficult than I am able to handle. These moments become Aha! Moments: the moment you realize God may actually have the circumstances there for a reason. Are you working against God? If so, that will always be really stressful. Relieve anxiety by learning that He allows circumstances in your life for a reason. When you are able to do this, your stress will lessen considerably (Romans 8:28-29).

Have you identified the areas you need to work on? Good! After you know what they are, you can develop ways to overcome them, one by one. This includes identifying productive ways to cope with stress and trying to learn to incorporate them into your behavior. Here is a list of ways to cope with stress and anxiety that I can recommend from personal experience:

# Identify Your Unique Coping Mechanisms – Before you cope, you need to find ways that fit your personality and lifestyle. Recognize that some ways of coping — such as by escaping the situation or running away from your problems — are destructive in the long run. The only way to effectively coping with stress and anxiety is to face the causes of this stress.

# Change Your Focus – Get your mind off of the stress by changing your perspective on a given situation. Or go somewhere to change your surroundings.

# Feed Your Soul – Everyone has their very own Soul Food. Some of Soul Foods are music, the beauty of nature, inspiring stories, special relationships, a quiet place in the woods, or warmth from a gently lapping fire in the fireplace. God placed in each of us a desire for a unique something that touches and feeds our soul and draws us closer to Him so that we may regain our balance. You may need to take a vacation or getaway to regroup, dream, and allow God to refill the cup of your soul. If you remember to take a faith step toward God, be still (Psalm 46:10) and let God’s presence surround you, you will really begin to relax and focus. My communication to God becomes a plea for His help. I pray “God help me to commit my stress and anxiety to You. Help me to be able to trust You to handle it. And please God, help me to accept Your way in my life.

I have a problem with nervousness especially when visiting a doctor, my heart starts pounding very hard and my palms start sweating heavily and I usually have the urge of running out on my appointment. It gets worse when they monitor my blood pressure it usually reads dangerously high due to my nervous attacks. I have similar symptoms when I have to public speak or be interviewed for a job. Are these signs of anxiety? Does anybody have similar symptoms I have?

Chosen Answer:

you should see a counselor. they are available at church, through some jobs, schools, etc…this anxiety came from somewhere. when you sit down and talk with a counselor, they will help you get to the root of how this anxiety began and if you are willing to help yourself, the anxiety will be eliminated or totally diminished…it depends on how often you go and the amount of confidence you have in yourself. this can change, don’t fret. you have already made the first step by admitting that this is a problem for you. good luck!

I’d like to know generally how anti anxiety medications work, how long one is supposed to take them, and how a person or a doctor knows when is the right time to stop the medication.
If the anxiety is due to a chemical imbalance, does that mean the meds must be taken forever?

Chosen Answer:

Are they selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors? They build up to a maximum therapeutic level, and slowly become less and less effective as time goes on. It depends on the drug, but they are not a permanent solution. They help break the cycle of anxiety, but it is necessary to change the circumstances that provoked the anxiety to begin with. Otherwise it is likely to happen again. The doctor should have told you how long to continue with the course of treatment, or at least have advised you of the typical duration.

I have not been diagnosed with anxiety but I have realised I am getting anxiety. The anxiety that I have is not that bad at all. I am quite anxious in certain situations but I can handle it. I know that a person should take up regular exercise anyway for their well-being. But, I have read that somewhere that exercise (60 minute sessions a couple of times a week), could reduce anxiety and maybe even eliminate anxiety.
What are your thoughts on this?

Chosen Answer:

Of course exercise is the very best thing for anxiety. It get you out into the open and getting your blood pumping, exercise also releases serotonin which makes you feel better

I am returning to work in 2 weeks and am feeling extreme anxiety and guilt about leaving my 6-month baby. I haven’t been apart from him for more than 6 hours since he’s been born. Financially our family needs two incomes, and I am obligated to return to work, but am emotionally not ready. Whenever I think of it, I start crying. How can I deal with this?

Chosen Answer:

Just remember that what is good for the mother is good for the child. All involved in the family process have their own needs. Even at an early age children start to understand that they fit in to a larger picture. So getting back to work or your regular routine is really good for a baby. It provides a rythm to their world. Plus after you have picked the proper type day care for you and your child you can feel confident that the socializing they are picking up inherently is very valuable as well.

But if these feeling persist or intensify see your doctor or a therapist as post partum depression is real and terrifying.

Good luck with work! Enjoy.

I have a lot of anxiety including social anxiety.

It’s easy for me to rationalize that I shouldn’t be afraid, but the symptoms still come. Taking deep breaths does not help at all.

How can I get rid of it all?

I keep obsessing over my tmj. I get tense, heart rate increases, dizziness. He does’nt understand anxiety and it’s pretty severe right now. Waiting for the Zoloft to kick back in. How do I explain this to him?

Chosen Answer:

Take him to your Dr / Therapist. He needs to start UNDERSTANDING and showing interest in your health if he is marrying you. Do not try to hide this from him. It’s a matter of honesty about who you are.

I have severe anxiety problems and I’m just 18 years old. How do you get over this problem? I see a psychiatrist on Tuesday. I’m currently on buspar and pristiq. In the past I’ve been on paxil, seroquel, Prozac, welbutrin, zoloft and Ativan. Unfortunately over the past yr none of these meds work. I’ve also been in therapy which hasn’t worked and I’ve tried exercising and it hasn’t worked. I don’t know what drug my psych will give me next what can I expect ?

Chosen Answer:

No medication gets rid of an anxiety disorder, you can only alleviate the symptoms to a degree determined by your approach. I am not implying that you will be stuck being anxious every second of your life, the symptoms can be reduced a great deal depending on the efficacy of your treatment(s). It is also important to realize that the disorder is not static, thus there will be times when you feel more anxious and times when you feel less anxious disregarding environmental factors.

What I found most useful is to combine various approaches used in treating anxiety such as supplementation of vital nutrients (Zinc, B-complex, Omega-3, Mg, Ca etc.) which will prevent, or in some cases correct, possible deficiencies propelling the disorder. Exercise might not make you feel better in the short run, but it certainly is not detrimental to one’s focus and overall mental/physical health. Aerobic exercise has proven to facilitate neurogenesis (creation of new neural connections) which is great news considering that chronic stress can cause neurotoxicity (excitotoxicity) and shrinking of the hippocampus. Meditation is also advised because it results in thickening of grey matter (associated with intelligence).

From prescription medication I have tried and was satisfied with Tianeptine (might be tricky to get in US) which promotes growth of new neurones and enhances the uptake of serotonin (opposite to SSRI). It works immediately and has virtually no negative side effects.
Pregabalin is another subject of consideration. It is a GABA analogue used mainly as anti-epileptic and in treatment of peripheral neuropathy, but has shown great success in treating anxiety as well. It does not share the addictive potential of other GABA related medication such as benzodiazepines so it might be used long term.

hope this helps and remember nothing is permanent nor your current levels of anxiety
